Easy A

Easy A early on starts the eyes rolling in the here-comes-another-lame-teen-flick way but quickly brings the eyes into focus and the funny bone tickling starts shortly after that. Olive (Emma Stone) is a cheeky yet anonymous California pubic school student who clearly inherits her smarts from liberal minded and model parents Rosemary (Patricia Clarkson) and Dill (Stanley Tucci). But this smart girl does a dumb thing when a gay friend asks her to pretend that they “did it” so that he is no longer the victim of homophobia. The story of her lost innocence goes viral on every social network thanks to Marianne (Amanda Bynes) a preppy, peppy bible thumping co-ed. Rather than submit to the humiliation brought on by her scarlet letter reputation she decides to use her new infamous celebrity to her advantage and in the process manages to lampoon a lot of hypocrisy. What initially looks like a sophomoric cookie cutter comedy fleshes out nicely as the excellent cast (that sparingly but effectively includes Thomas Haden Church and to a lesser degree Malcolm McDowell and Lisa Kudrow) has some beefy material to work with.  Easy A gets an easy B+.
