The Social Network

October 3rd, 2010

The Social Network is the biopic of Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg solid as ever) and his rise from virgin geek to world’s youngest billionaire. Re: being the “creator” of Facebook – well that was the topic of much legal discussion which is at the core of enormous tension that made putting this story on film worthwhile. Facebook’s small beginnings were at Harvard University ...

Fubar II

October 3rd, 2010

Fubar II is the hilarious follow-up to 2002’s well received Fubar. We catch up to Calgarians Terry (David Lawrence) and Dean (Paul Spence) as Dean is celebrating the remission of his cancer below the waist even though surgery has left him a “Unitarian” so to speak. The celebration gets a little out of hand after the boisterous Tron (Andrew Sparacino) arrives with his party chainsaw that reduc ...

Let Me In

October 3rd, 2010

Let Me In is a remake of the captivating 2008 Swedish take on the vampire mystique called Let the Right One In. Here Oskar is now Owen and Eli is now Abby and replacing the frigid Stockholm suburb is a seedy neighbourhood in New Mexico (surprising to some also no stranger to sub zero temperatures) but otherwise only the names have been changed. Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a friendless pre-teen ...

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger

October 3rd, 2010

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger is the latest light hearted comedy from Woody Allen that’s his London version of Modern (dysfunctional) Family and which continues his current love affair with Europe. As usual Allen has managed to tap a litany of acting heavyweights this time mostly British with American Josh Brolin tossed in. He plays Roy a med school grad that turned his back on medicine ...

StreetDance 3D

October 3rd, 2010

StreetDance 3D is yet another eyeful of krunking, locking, popping and breaking as apparently we were left wanting by Step Up, Step Up 2 the Street and Step Up 3D. This newer one dimensional 3D offering comes from Great Britain but still the story line is all too familiar with any excuse being used to bust a move and with the same end game – making it to the big dance competition in New York ...

You Again

September 26th, 2010

You Again is the latest light heated and cutely titled Disney offering. The usually stunning Kristen Bell pulls off a risky performance playing Marni who as a high schooler was unattractive and bullied and it didn’t help that her initials spell MOO. All this did not kill her and indeed made her stronger – so much so that now as a gorgeous young woman she’s on the fast track to the rarefied ai ...

Easy A

September 19th, 2010

Easy A early on starts the eyes rolling in the here-comes-another-lame-teen-flick way but quickly brings the eyes into focus and the funny bone tickling starts shortly after that. Olive (Emma Stone) is a cheeky yet anonymous California pubic school student who clearly inherits her smarts from liberal minded and model parents Rosemary (Patricia Clarkson) and Dill (Stanley Tucci). But this smar ...

The Virginity Hit

September 19th, 2010

The Virginity Hit refers to the ingesting of marijuana from a gaudy bong set aside by four young men from New Orleans only to be used when one of the quartet has finally cast off his virginity. Three go up in smoke fairly early but Matt (Matt Bennett) lags behind and the film quickly boils down to the task of dispatching his cherry. Years before Matt was adopted into a family clearly untouche ...
